Unable to install Windows 8.1 guest on Linux host
Unable to install Windows 8.1 guest on Linux host
I'm using Arch Linux 32-bit (up to date) and Virtualbox 4.3.14. PAE/NX and VT-x are enabled in the VM's settings, as well as the in the host's BIOS. When I boot the VM from the Windows 8.1 iso, I see the logo, then soon get a "guru meditation". Logs are attached.

Is this is a 32bit Win8.1? I ask because your host doesn't support 64bit.
Also, I'm reasonably sure that Win8 requires NX support, which your host doesn't have, or it isnt enabled.

OSE. Compiled by my distro, installed through the package manager.mpack wrote:OSE? Self built?

I don't know why / how.
I didn't format the drive. I created it using the default options when creating the VM. Does it matter? I'll be partitioned and formatted during the install process. I don't even get past the opening Windows logo when trying to install Windows.mpack wrote: JFS?
Yes.mpack wrote:Is this is a 32bit Win8.1? I ask because your host doesn't support 64bit.
My BIOS claims I have the XD bit enabled, which Wikipedia tells me is the Intel name for NX. I have no idea why VirtualBox wouldn't see it as enabled.mpack wrote:Also, I'm reasonably sure that Win8 requires NX support, which your host doesn't have, or it isnt enabled.
Re: Unable to install Windows 8.1 guest on Linux host
My BIOS shows XD as on.

Re: Unable to install Windows 8.1 guest on Linux host
Sorry about the bad link in my previous post. It's fixed. The photo shows the BIOS thinks XD is enabled. Attached is a screenshot from this program: https://www.grc.com/securable.htm saying both XD ("Hardware D.E.P.") and VT-x ("Hardware Virtualisation") are enabled. You can also see my processor in that screenshot. It supports SSE2 and PAE. From my Google search for 0x0000005d, these are the only things it looks like I need. "PAE/NX" and "VT-x/AMD-V" are enabled in the VM's settings. Do you see in your Google search for 0x0000005d something I've missed?
Edit: Also find attached my /proc/cpuinfo.
