Connecting to internet with Windows XP

Post by Joonas08 »

Hello,

I'm running Virtualbox on Windows 7, with a XP guest system. I'm new to Virtualbox, and I want to use internet on Windows XP.

However, I use wireless network, not a cable one, so I have no clue what to do.

Both NAT & Bridged Adapter show no options to choose from:
NAT

Bridged adapter: "Invalid settings detected" (NAT didn't have that)
Bridged adapter: "Invalid settings detected" (NAT didn't have that)

Your network is virtual, like your XP VirtualMachine. You should pick NAT. It's the easiest to connect to the internet, if your host is already connected and you leave the default DHCP (Obtain address automatically) in your XP machine.

In Bridged mode you should be seeing your network adapters, unless you skipped something during the installation.

For more information, see: Chapter 6: Virtual networking and especially Chapter 6.2: Introduction to networking modes.

Alright, so I've got the internet to work. But now I have another problem.

Whenever I launch Internet Explorer, after a few seconds (about 10 or so) it crashes, asking me if to send an error report or not.

That's another topic. If another user came here looking for help with "Connecting to internet with Windows XP", a crashing IE has nothing to do with that.

But, since you're new around here, here are a couple of tips (please do not respond to this thread any further if they don't work, open a new thread instead):
- Hit Esc as soon as IE starts loading to prevent page loading. Disable hardware rendering in IE.
- Disable 3D acceleration in your guest.
- Don't use IE.
