Webcam not recognized by VirtualBox

I'm trying to get my Logitech QuickCam Pro 9000 working in my linux (Ubuntu 14.04) guest running in a Windows 7 Enterprise host, with VirtualBox 4.3.12. The webcam is recognized in Windows, and I've added a filter for it in the USB tab of the Settings menu. However, even though Windows recogizes the WebCam, VirtualBox doesn't: it gets listed as "Unknown device 046D:0990 [0008]", and this is what's been added to the list of USB devices. My linux guest doesn't recognize it at all: lsusb returns a list of only three items, none of which is the webcam. I've tried unplugging it and plugging it in again, but "dmesg | tail" doesn't recognize that anything's happening: from the perspective of guest OS, this USB device is non-existent.

I've read through quite a few posts on webcams in VirtualBox dating back to 2008, but none seems to quite fit. Are there some particular drivers which need to be installed to enable VirualBox to recognize and use this WebCam in its guests?

I should mention that USB itself is fine: I've added a USB storage device (which was recognized by VirtualBox), and I can attach and use it fine from my Linux guest.

Thanks,
-A.
