ModernIE VMs for VirtualBox

Post by OraOra »

I am trying to run the VMs for VirtualBox given by ModernIE for IE web dev testing and have read http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E26217_01/E26 ... rt-vm.html .

When I download and extract, e.g., IE9 for Win 7 from the files listed here: https://az412801.vo.msecnd.net/vhd/VMBu ... ualBox.txt I get a so called Open Virtualization Format Archive (.ova).

At first I tried to make a new VM and then use that as the virtual hard drive but that always gave me an error, I think, "version not supported" or something though here: https://modernievirt.blob.core.windows. ... -01-21.pdf MS writes specifically that "There were some issues with VirtualBox.. that were completely fixed by using the latest version (4.2.16)." and I am using 4.2.16 from here: http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualb ... 92-Win.exe .

So now I am making a backup copy of my existing Windows 7 VM and will then double-click on this Open Virtualization Format Archive (.ova) file. What happened when I did that before was that it would tell me to "Import Virtual Appliance" and show me the Appliance settings, though it always highlights the existing Windows 7 VM that I have made myself.

I am not wondering will this Open Virtualization Format Archive (.ova) file import itself into this existing Windows 7 VM of mine or actually make a new VM? I am trying to avoid messing with the VM I created since it runs JUST as I like it to and don't want any changes being made to this.

Logically I am thinking it WILL make a new VM I am just asking here to confirm this and not have to regret it afterwards since it took me some time to get all the stuff I wanted in the VM I created running.

Thanks for your confirmation.

Best Regards

Pretty much answers what I am looking for, though if someone "in charge and experience with VMs" can just send a little green light that would make this less exciting in a negative way for me, hehe.

Thank you.

Yes the double click on the OVA file did the trick however I would like to suggest to people to set up their base Windows 7 VM and then various linked clones with the various versions of IE instead of using these MS VMs, it will save you a lot of trouble.
