Symlinks to shared folder does not work

When I attempt to create a symlink from the guest OS (Linux) to my shared folder on OS X (Mavericks), I get a message: "Operation not permitted". I have tried various suggestions such as:
VBoxManage setextradata YOURVMNAME VBoxInternal2/SharedFoldersEnableSymlinksCreate/YOURSHAREFOLDERNAME 1
But it does not work! Any help will be greatly appreciated as this has become a major road block in development.

Do not use shared folders. Use a true network share. The first if for convenience, the latter for things that actually work.

Any specific steps on implementing this work-around?

Work-around? It's not a work-around, it's how things are supposed to work in the real world. How would you connect two physical PCs? With a network share. That's it, no magic.
What is it that you're trying to do, and between what host and what guest? Is it maybe a better idea to start a new topic?

Hi socratis
I was trying to set a hardlink within my XP-guest to a shared-folder on my OSX-host to save some preference files I need in a program I run in my guest. I got the error-message that hardlinks are only applicable to local NTFS-folders.
Am I having the same problem as VDev? Could I use the same solution?

Yes, so hardlinks are neither possible to shared nor to proper network-folders. I guess I will have to copy the preferences files manually from the guest to the host.
Thanks to all!

Something that might make your life a little bit easier would be to share the OSX destination folder, create a shortcut to the XP folder that contains the preference files you want to copy and move it into the shared folder on XP. That way you can dbl-clk the shortcut and at least select them all at one time to copy to the OSX folder.
I hope that made sense.
