I was working on a Ubuntu VM on my mac but when I tried to close out and save the state I received the message
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Failed to save the state of the virtual machine Ubuntu 10.04 i386_General_Intrepid_Dev_v0.31.

Could not create a directory
'/Users/sfitzsim/VirtualBox VMs/Ubuntu 10.04 i386_SDL_Dev_1/Snapshots'
to save state to (VERR_ACCESS_DENIED).

Details
Result Code: VBOX_E_FILE_ERROR (0x80BB00004)
Component: Console
Interface: IConsole {8ab7c520-2442-4b66-8d74-4ff1e195d2b6}
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Does anyone know what caused this error/how to fix it?

You posted in "OS X Server Guests" - which is clearly not correct.

Did you mean to post in "OS X hosts"?

Ah yes thank you for pointing that out

Moved to "OS X Hosts" (and cross post deleted). I suggest that you search this forum for previous reports of host permissions issues.

You may want to repair your disk permissions with Disk Utility.

Alas, I repaired disk permissions but the problem persists.

Please post the output of the command:

Code: Select all

ls -lR '/Users/sfitzsim/VirtualBox VMs/Ubuntu 10.04 i386_SDL_Dev_1'

'No such file or directory'
Out of curiosity I also tried ls /Users/sfitzsim and that also does not exist

Run the following from the hosts terminal and post the results:

Code: Select all

VBoxManage list systemproperties | grep "Default machine folder"
and

Code: Select all

VBoxManage list vms

Also are you using a 3rd party program like vagrant, phpvirtualbox, Etc.. to run VirtualBox?

I am not using a 3rd party program.
The outputs are
Default machine folder: /Users/mctink/VirtualBox VMs
and
"Ubuntu 10.04 i386_General_Intrepid_Dev_v0.31" {543a4c66-78d5-4682-9d0f-c5b562c314de}

Well, you see where the "Access denied" error might have come from...
Did you copy this VM from a friend/colleague/coworker of yours? How exactly did you copy it? Just the VDI, the .vbox, the whole directory? For reference, here is what you could have done: Moving a VM

Victory! creating the '/Users/sfitzsim/VirtualBox VMs' fixed the problem. Thank you!
Also I had a .ova file and just used 'import appliance'. For future reference, was there another way I was supposed to do that?

actually, any time I've imported an .ova appliance it added it to my VM folder. I never had to create another folder.

Huh, guess it was just a glitch. Thanks everyone for your help!

Huh, computers have a tendency; they follow rules. Glitches are really rare. Human mistakes on the other hand, way more often.

You still have not answered the question of how you got a hold of the VM. I think it was from a user named "sfitzsim" and that the VM recipe was pointing to an absolute directory, hence your problem. Creating a directory to stop the errors does not fix the fundamental problem.
