I assure you TrueType fonts look a lot better than that, and were the mainstay on all Windows apps well before 2010. AFAIK OTF / TrueType are basically the same thing, the only thing different is who controls the spec.

Hmm. We need to know what app the OP has - meaning exact version.

But, I suspect yes - we're looking at the Word equivalent of "Safe Mode".

BTW, The ClearType Tuner PowerToy is 32bit only and is mainly for XP and Vista. The only difference between it and the one built into Windows 7 is that it has a contrast slider.

I had markedly improved performance by enabling the ClearText setting. Thanks for the suggestion. Start menu > searched for "ClearType", followed the prompts.

Thanks everyone for your thoughts on this. Here is some additional information that you all requested:

A bit more information: The guest is running MS Word 2013, the newist version of word. It looks very different because microsoft seems to have really redesigned how things look recently. Compatability mode on the caption bar is when it is working with say a .doc file but the newist version likes to use .docx files. The font in MS Word is just Times New Roman.
The host is running Libreoffice which is using Libreration Serif.


I am using 2D Video Accelleration.

Let me know if I missed anything.

I'm surprised ClearType wasn't enabled by default.

Its totally possible I turned it off by accedent at some point in the past.
