Hello,

Can anybody at all operate Windows 2012 Server Standard Edition with installed virtualbox guest addtiions?
I'm using the current realease of Oracle VirtualBox Software: 4.3.14.r95030

My VM just freezes after logging on to W2k12 SE without an error message...

Would be great to know whether somebody has W2k12 SE running with the current VirtualBox version...

Best Regards
Alex

There is an issue with 4.3.14 on Windows hosts. Until it's fixed, you might want to roll back to 4.3.12. If you aren't on a Windows host, I'm not sure.

Thanks a lot for this information :-)

Actually my host system is: Windows 2008 R2 Datacenter with Service Pack 1
Is there a virtualbox version available which could operate W2k12 SE successfully on my host?

Thanks
Alex

4.3.12 should work. You can find it in the older builds section on the VirtualBox.org downloads page.

Thanks a lot for the quick reply again! :-)

So I will try now: VirtualBox-4.2.16-86992-Win.exe

I'm not that experienced with virtualbox yet...
Maybe you can provide me an advise how to downgrade to this versiion? (e.g. uninstall 4.3 and install 4.2)

I have some other VM's running and I don't want to lose the configuration...

Thank you very much!
Alex

You just uninstall 4.3 like you would any Windows program. Not sure why you want to drop down to 4.2 but you install it the same way. As long as you don't delete the VM folders all your guests will still be there. If you want USB support don't forget the matching extension pack.

You saved me again :-)
Of course I will downgrade to: VirtualBox-4.3.12-93733-Win.exe (4.2 was still on my local disk...).

Once I have downgraded I will provide a feedback whether I can operate W2k12 SE with VirtualBox-4.3.12-93733 successfully...

Wish you a wonderful weekend
Alex

Thank you very much for your brilliant help loukingjr,

After downgrading to: VirtualBox-4.3.12-93733-Win.exe
my W2k12 SE VM at least already runs for minutes after logging on... :-)

Keep observing...

Kind Regards
Alex

UPDATE
=========
On the first glance VirtualBox-4.3.12-93733-Win.exe looked ok...

But having done some configuration in the W2k12 SE OS like activating RDP access, installing features like SNMP, Telnet client, Backup,
the system just freezes again... :(
Extension Pack and VM Guest Additions installed from this version as well...

Best Regards
Alex

PS so the question is: shall I try to use an older version or will there be a fixed version sometime available?

If you don't elaborate on the problem you have with 4.3.12 then no-one can answer your question.

Minimum information needed for assistance.

Attaching the vbox.log file
Host system is: Windows 2008 R2 Datacenter with Service Pack 1
Using: VirtualBox-4.3.12-93733-Win.exe
VM Guest Additions installed on the guest system: Windows Server 2012 Standard Edition.

Additional information: A Windows 2008 R2 SP1 Enterprise guest system runs fine on this host.

00:00:04.672481 NumCPUs <integer> = 0x000000000000000a (10)

It seems that you allocate more resources to your VM than you actually have. And remember that VirtualBox cares only about the number of physical cores, not logical ones. Try reducing the number of CPUs to your VM to 6 or less.

Just as a practical matter, I have yet to see any posts claiming increasing a guests CPU count above 2 improves performance. I have seen just the opposite however.

Well, that would depend on the usage. I have a VM with XP that is running a number crunching program. The more CPUs, the merrier. I've given it 4 out of 4 physical (whenever I need to run it) but it can still perform better even if I cross the line from physical to logical. See: download/file.php?id=11199
The host however was really suffering (even for the most basic functions) and I would definitely not recommend it for everyday use.
