4.3.14 very slow on windows

Post by f456 »

Hi,

I upgraded directly from 4.3.10 to 4.3.14. Everything seems to work fine, but the QT front is very slow.

I takes about 30 seconds from double-click to the window appearing on the screen. Similarly, it takes 15+ seconds when i open the settings of an individual machine.

I have noticed that it opens a new Qt window if i double click a .vbox file, even if a window already exists. previous versions simply refreshed the current window.

os: win 7 sp1, all updates
vbox: 4.3.14

Might be interesting to know what your CPU model is...

... or what else is running at the time, e.g. a picture of the Windows task list would provide that VirtualBox is indeed the one hogging CPU, and not (say) Windows update.

Processor: Processor Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-3612QM CPU @ 2.10GHz, 2101 Mhz, 4 Core(s), 8 Logical Processor(s)

It's a Notebook cpu, but it's running in fullspeed mode. The CPU is idling during the waiting time, and there is plenty of free memory. No other processes do significant things.

How did you determined that the CPU is idling, during that time? The Windows Task Manager displays an average CPU usage (total and per process), which make it easy to misinterpret if you have lots of CPU cores. On an 8-core CPU, a single-threaded application that consumes 100% CPU time of one core, while all other cores are really idle, will show you 12.5% total CPU usage and process CPU usage for that process, which might make you think that nothing is going on. The same thing happens if the individual CPU graphs are too crowded, or if that single-threaded process is being executed sequentially, across several cores, in small time slices.

i am using process hacker. All the cores are idling, with the system idle process consuming 99% of the CPU.

That usually means that something is waiting on I/O.

Confirming 4.3.14 slow down on windows.

There were no any problems before VirtualBox-4.3.14-95030-Win release.
Updated on two different machines:
1) W7 x32 Desktop: Intel i5-2500 3.30GHz / 6Gb DDR3 / AMD HD 6450 (14.6 driver) / Crucial CT240M500 SSD / Symantec Endpoint Protection
2) W7 x64 Laptop: AMD A8-4500M APU 1.90GHz / 8GB DDR3 / AMD HD 7640G (14.6 driver) / Crucial M4 CT256M4 SSD / Malwarebytes Anti-Malware

Both slowed down immediately, didn't have much time to play around yet, but noticed one of the laptop's svchost.exe raised up to ~160 Mb instead of ~20-25 Mb average load.
All interface slowed down, especially VM VirtualBox Manager, there was a 0.5-1 second delay between switching tabs or menu buttons.

Downgraded back to VirtualBox-4.3.12-93733-Win, all good and fast again.

Had this same issue, found this thread, and then installed 4.3.12 instead of 4.3.16. Works fine now.
