Clone an existing HDD and use it as a virtual box?
Clone an existing HDD and use it as a virtual box?
I was wondering how I could clone my laptops HDD and then use that as a virtual box on my desk top. I would like to be able to change the size of the HDD from 250gigs, down to something more manageable like 20-50 gigs if possible. Is this feasible? I have a USB HDD that I can hook up to my computer so I know Ill need to pop out the laptop HDD but as far as turning it into a VB, Im unsure of how to proceed.

There are three groups of people. Those that can count and those that can't.

What OS is it running? And do you intend to stop using the image on the laptop?
Lou's suggestion of Disk2VHD is a good for for a Windows image, but in that case be aware that you probably can't keep the laptop and VM images both activated.
XP requires some additional steps to make this process - Physical to Virtual (a.k.a. P2V) migration easier.

It would be windows XP home (premium?), and yes I am aware I could not keep both images going at once. The laptop has some broken hinges and Id honestly rather buy a new laptop then fix the hinges, plus its mostly good for word processing and not what I would like to use it for.
Thank you Lou for the suggestion, I will try that one out ASAP.

Moved to "Windows Guests".
