HI folks,
I've been trying to solve this issue for days and I'm at a complete loss.
I have a Sidewinder Force Feedback 2 joystick but when I run the setup CD it cannot detect that it's plugged in (USB). Nor does Windows detect any new hardware either. I tried adding a blank USB Filter but it still wouldn't detect anything.
In the Device Manager I have a Yellow Bang on the PCI Universal Serial Bus entry that I think could be the culprit but the win98 CD doesn't have drivers for it and I couldn't find a fix online anywhere.
Any helps would be a godsend.
Win98se Sidewinder Joystick Won't Install
Re: Win98se Sidewinder Joystick Won't Install
Anyone?
I've looked up solutions for this for a week and even had an IT friend tried to help me but he couldn't figure it out.
My host is Windows 8.1 and the guest is Win98se, the joystick is plug-n-play in the host and works.
I have USB 2.0 EHCI setup, the joystick shows up in the device filters and I added it but it doesn't attach. I tried adding a filter with just the Name field but it didn't attach, I tried a blank filter and it didn't attach.
I also made sure the host didn't grab the usb joystick before launching the guest.
I just don't know what to do anymore.

Re: Win98se Sidewinder Joystick Won't Install
It's time again for "the list". Follow the steps below. If there is a failure, please state which step failed:
- Make sure that the Extension Pack is installed on the host. The same version as VirtualBox.
- Create a USB filter in your guest settings while the device is plugged in the host. Delete all values except VendorID and ProductID. Check also http://www.linux-usb.org/usb.ids (if you have to) to make sure that you have the numbers correct.
- Unplug the device.
- Start your guest (the one that you applied the filter to). Let it start completely. Log in if you have to.
- Plug your device. The filter should capture it and pass control to your guest. You might get a "New hardware found" wizard on the host, that's normal.
- If the device shows up in your host and is not captured by the filter, either the filter is incorrect, or there might be a problem with your filter installation.
- Are you by any chance using a USB 3.0 port?
- Is the VirtualBox USB Driver installed in your host?
- Check out these two Windows-specific ways to troubleshoot potential driver installation issues:
- Try your favorite search engine. It can work miracles most of the time.
How did you do that exactly? I have a feeling that you didn't perform steps 3 and 5 above, but you left the joystick plugged in all the time.Konuvis wrote:I also made sure the host didn't grab the usb joystick before launching the guest.
Do NOT send me Personal Messages (PMs) for troubleshooting, they are simply deleted.

If you obfuscate any information requested, I will obfuscate my response. These are virtual UUIDs, not real ones.

Re: Win98se Sidewinder Joystick Won't Install
First of all thank you for replying because I am at my wits end.
1. All good (since beginning)
2. Done (they are the right values and like I mentioned above I even tried a blank filter once or twice)
3. Done (I did always unplug it but since it didn't work I even once disabled the HID in the host to make sure)
4. Done
5. Fail, i still get no USB attached, windows doesn't discover new hardware. The joystick though does respond with a LED lightup when I plug it in.
6. It's not captured and the filter is correct, it is Microsoft 045e SideWinder Force Feedback 2 001B. How could I check that there's a problem in filter install? Also I now have 2 entries for my joystick (more on that below), one shows 'captured', the other shows 'busy'. I tried adding filters for both but none worked.
7. I was indeed using USB 3.0, I assumed VirtualBox would downgrade it automatically but since you mentioned it I did try again a few times in a USB 2.0 port with still no success. It did however create a separate entry for the joystick in the USB Devices.
8. Are you referring to the USB 2.0 EHCI that installs with the Extension pack? If so yes. If not I'm not sure what you mean.
9. a. and b. is something new so I will definitely try it when I get back from work tonight.
10. like I said I've been googling for about a week (I have the same issue in VMWare which I was trying to troubleshoot prior) which is why I'm going crazy
For your question see 3.
PS: Do you think the yellow bang on PCI Universal Serial Bus is a factor? I keep assuming it should be but even disabling USB 2.0 I have the same issue.

Re: Win98se Sidewinder Joystick Won't Install
I managed the get the drivers for PCI Universal Serial Bus so no more yellow bang there but I'm still unable to attach the joystick even after repeating the steps several times.
