Resolution Problem after Many Troubleshooting Attempts

I've got a freshly installed copy of Ubuntu 14 on a Windows 7 host. I created and installed this VM after an earlier one got corrupted from being abruptly shut off too many times. The prior machine had no difficultly with changing the resolution, but this one does. It's stuck at the tiny default resolution and I'm not even able to view the entire window of the Settings or other windows due to the tiny resolution.
I've reviewed all the support threads I could find on this topic on this forum, stackoverflow, and by using Google search. The solutions/suggestions I've found thusfar have been unsuccessful. Here's what I've tried:
- * Installing guest additions
- * Using the GUI interface to try to alter settings in the Display panel
- * Using xrandr and other command line options to save other geometries/resolutions as options, then restart everything
What else can I try?

Moved to "LInux Guests" since I doubt that your Windows Host has any relevance to the question asked.
I don't know about Ubuntu, but when this happens to a Windows guest you have to force it to use a different display size - not the one it was previously configured to use - and do a full reboot. After it is working again you can reconfigure it back to the display size you really want.
Explanation: as long the the OS thinks that the configured display size is unchanged, it will continue to use the corrupted config. So repeatedly setting it to the display it thinks it's already working at will not fix the problem. You need to select a different display size, forcing it to create a new config.

I suspect the guest additions aren't correctly installed. It's the reason nearly 100% of the time. Try running this in the Ubuntu terminal...
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get install dkms build-essential
when it's done try reinstalling the guest additions from the Device menu. You did use the "offical" guest additions I assume.

I should have mentioned 3D acceleration is broken in 4.3.12 so it will be a tad slow.
You should download
https://www.virtualbox.org/download/tes ... -94438.iso and with Ubuntu shutdown, attach it to your guest just as you did with the Ubuntu .iso, start the guest and run the test guest additions.
