I forgot to remind you if you haven't done so already, you may want to try and get help from the openSUSE forums. Even though you are running a virtual machine the problem you are having has more to do with a damaged/corrupted hard drive than anything to do with VirtualBox. Just a thought.

yes, you are right.
I've been trying to run it from another Suse instance as a slave drive and it gives file system inconsistency errors while trying to repair it.
Thus, the VM drive was clearly damaged for some reason during the crash.
Will continue on the OpenSuse forums.
