Mint 17 displays black screen and/or crashes

- VirtualBox v4.3.12 w/Guest Additions 4.3.13
- Host: Win 7 Pro 64 bit (8 GB RAM)
- Guest: Linux Mint 17 Cinnamon 64 bit, (1540 MB RAM, 128 MB video RAM [max permitted])

I've run out of things to try and am totally befuddled. Mint 17 runs fine (albeit slowly) in a VM on my laptop in software rendering mode when 3D acceleration is disabled, but never works when I enable 3D acceleration (sometimes black screens, sometimes crashes).

LMDE Cinnamon and Debian 7.1 VMs also won't run with 3D acceleration enabled.

I don't think this is related to the problems reported with the Mesa libgl v10.1.3 update - I'm at v10.1.0, and even tried the new 4.3.13 Guest Additions anyway, with same results.

When the PC is booted with the Mint live-dvd, it runs fine and does not require software rendering, so the video hardware seems capable. I also installed a Mint 17 VM under a Mint 17 host on a spare ssd, and it works fine.

It sounds like it might be a Windows video driver issue, but I've run the Intel updater and have the most current drivers. PC is a Thinkpad T500 with integrated graphics ("Intel 4 Series Express Chipset family" driver 8.15.10.2869").
