Linux Installer Quits

Pardon my newness. Installed VB fine, started new session as a Win7 machine. It asked for a disk so I inserted Linux Mint 17. That appeared and I was able to scroll down Start. But that was that... the CD drive LED stopped blinking and we just sat there. I tried Refresh, got the same results.

I'm sure it's me missing something, but what?

What is it you are trying to do? According to your post and the section you posted in, you were trying to install a Windows guest so you attached a Linux Mint Disk? If you want to install Linux Mint you should use the correct template for it and your post should be in Linux Guests, not Windows Guests. If you want to install Windows you should use a Windows disk.

My PC is W7HP. I've created three dual-boot partitions to try Linux distros. Those work fine, other than waiting for the reboot time required to switch the OS. Hoping to reduce that time, I installed VB. I first created a Machine as Linux. After a while, that went to bsod. Then I realized that mistake -- my distro CDs are Windows ISOs. So I tried again, calling the machine Win7. That's where I am now. Everything starts fine: the machine reads the CD, the CD responds to the Start command, but that's that.

So, I take it you are trying to install Linux Mint 17 as a guest in VirtualBox? If so, you need to download the Linux Mint 17 .iso from their site, create a new machine, select Ubuntu 32bit or 64bit as the template, then attach the Mint .iso to the new machine then start it to install.

I must've chosen some other Linux the first time. Your suggestion takes me a bit further, but still dies, with:
SMBUS base address uninitialized. Upgrade BIOS or use force_addr=0xaddr
Then I tried 'Start in compatibility mode' and that went on and on. Most everything said [pass], but
Starting SMB/CIPS file and Active Directory Service... [fail]
So we're getting there and I thank you for the assistance.

(I can paste the log if that helps)
(> you need to download the Linux Mint 17 .iso ... got a bunch already)

What is this a log of? There doesn't seem to be a CD attached, and the GAs are responding (albeit the GAs from the Ubuntu repo), so this must be a working guest OS, not something that failed during installation.

I don't know what it's a log of, just chose to save the log that was there. I just un/reinstalled VB, tried Linux again and am sending you another log; probably no better.

I see no errors, just warnings in the png shots. I can tell you with the lack of host resources and no VMX, it is going to take a long time to get to where it shows anything on your screen. I repeat a LONG time.

You might have it there. My PC was cutting-edge, ten years ago. I plan to modernize later this year, hopefully still with Win7, and will then try VB again... thanks all.
