3d Acceleration and Guest Additions
Hi guys! Newbie question here.
I'm running Windows 7 (64bit) as Guest under Linux Mint Peta (64bit) as Host. I can't run games on the VM because I wasn't able to enable the 3d acceleration in the VM.
If I use dxdiag in the VM it clearly says "Direct3D: Not Available". So far so good.
Now, the thing is that I not only install the guest Additions (default installation path Program Files/Sun) but I've also enable (checked ) 2D and 3D acceleration setting with the video memory to it's max of 256 (RAM memory about 2Gb).
So unless there is some strange and dark ritual involving 3D activation I'm completely clueless about whats wrong here.
I just want to play a few retro starcraft/age matches... :'(
Any help, as always is most welcome.
Sincerely yours, ChukerSweet

Re: 3d Acceleration and Guest Additions
Just in case, if I write "/usr/lib/nux/unity_support_test -p" in my host linux I get:
OpenGL vendor string: Intel Open Source Technology Center
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa DRI Intel(R) Sandybridge Mobile
OpenGL version string: 3.0 Mesa 9.2.1
Not software rendered: yes
Not blacklisted: yes
GLX fbconfig: yes
GLX texture from pixmap: yes
GL npot or rect textures: yes
GL vertex program: yes
GL fragment program: yes
GL vertex buffer object: yes
GL framebuffer object: yes
GL version is 1.4+: yes
Unity 3D supported: yes
So the problem is not there. I didn't however install the guess adidtions in safe mode, on the guest OS, cuolud that be the problem? I can share folders....

Re: 3d Acceleration and Guest Additions
I think there might be some compatibility issue between the versions of the VM and the guess adititios.
Does anyone see some kind of trouble here? The version do look a bit different...

Re: 3d Acceleration and Guest Additions
Does Aero work in your Windows 7 guest? if not, the ga's aren't installed properly. You don't want to install the guest additions for Windows 7 in safe mode so that's fine.

Re: 3d Acceleration and Guest Additions
Your first issue that you need to resolve is the fact that you are running the OSE version of VirtualBox from the Distro of the host. We do not support that version here.
I can almost promise that if you remove it and install the correct version from VirtualBox.org, a lot of problems will go away.

Re: 3d Acceleration and Guest Additions
Ohh what does OSE stand for?
My distro is:
::::::::::::::
/etc/lsb-release
::::::::::::::
DISTRIB_ID=LinuxMint
DISTRIB_RELEASE=16
DISTRIB_CODENAME=petra
DISTRIB_DESCRIPTION="Linux Mint 16 Petra"
::::::::::::::
/etc/os-release
::::::::::::::
NAME="Ubuntu"
VERSION="13.10, Saucy Salamander"
ID=ubuntu
ID_LIKE=debian
PRETTY_NAME="Ubuntu 13.10"
VERSION_ID="13.10"
So, should I download "Ubuntu 13.04 ("Raring Ringtail") / 13.10 ("Saucy Salamander") / 14.04 ("Trusty Tahr") i386 | AMD64" form "virtualbox org wiki Linux_Downloads" ?
And before downloading and installing that, I should remove my present Vbox. Can that be done with something like "sudo apt-get remove virtualbox-ose --purge" is there a way so salvage the virtual computers I've created?

Re: 3d Acceleration and Guest Additions
I looked at the system requirements for StarCraft and AOE. They require DirectDraw. As far as DirectDraw is concerned...
so I'm guessing even if you use the official version of VirtualBox along with the guest additions it most likely won't work. I was reading some posts from 2010 where people running Windows 7 on metal couldn't get it running.DirectDraw is a deprecated API that used to be a part of Microsoft's DirectX API...

Re: 3d Acceleration and Guest Additions
You can remove VirtualBox from your host the same way you installed it. Through Synaptic or The Software Center.
Your VM's will be fine. you would just have to reinstall the guest additions.

Re: 3d Acceleration and Guest Additions
Thax allot for the extra data on older games! But by now I just want to make this deam virtualbox/guessadditions/3d to run, It kind of personal at this point.
Now I've install VirtualBox Version 4.3.0 r89960, with the guess aditions from download virtualbox org virtualbox 4.3.0. You can see al this in the pic.
The thing is that even if I installed the guess addition, not with the experimental 3D, the xsdiag says there is no aceleration. And now it's not the blame of old/incompatible versions.
So, any idea??

Re: 3d Acceleration and Guest Additions
Yes, it's one or the other. You can install the WMMD driver which will give you 3D and Aero or you can install DirectX which won't.

Re: 3d Acceleration and Guest Additions
Why did you choose 4.3.0? The first release in the new 4.3 model. I would have gone with the newest that was available 4.3.12 which has many bug fixes

Re: 3d Acceleration and Guest Additions
is what I got updating and downloading from terminal. I can re install from the repository, both VM and Gadditions.

Which one should I pick?
I can do that, this 3D problem however is not a " sutil " bug, and I have serious doubts it will go away updating a few versions.

Mmm interesting. I don't care about Aero, this WMMD could be install from some packages from windows central? And wont' conflict with the virtual box trying to impose a "virtualized version" of my native 3D features?

Re: 3d Acceleration and Guest Additions
You are missing the point. We do not support any other VirtualBox product than the one from VirtualBox.org
