centOS 6.5 will not install

Hi

I have install virtualbox on to my Linux Mint 17 machine. Installation went well no issues. From here I created an installation for CentOS 6.5 64bit, and as the installation progress it crashed - the error it was throwing "The Virtual Machine reports that the guest OS does not support mouse pointer integration using the current video mode". Now I have already reseached this error, and one of the things I did under the impression that I could resolve it myself was to install Guest Additions. However, despite doing this, I am still getting the same problem, and I am unable to complete an installation of CentOS.

Can anyone please help me?

The message you mention is a warning, not an error. And in any case, if software gives you a regular error message then it hasn't crashed. A crash is an unexpected failure not anticipated in the design. OTOH if you get an normal error message then that's a designed (intentional) outcome.

And you can't have installed the Guest Additions before you've even installed the guest OS: the GAs are provided as a guest-os-installed application suite.

Now, that all said, the software may indeed have crashed - though not for anything related to that warning message. So, please explain the exact behaviour that made you believe it had crashed, and also provide a VM log file - for details of whats needed see Minimum information needed for assistance.

Thanks for replying.

My terminology is due to the fact that the installation doesn't continue and can only be terminated, or perhaps I should say that VirtualBox only allows you the option to shutdown the vm. The installation of the guest addition is via software manager in Lnux Mint, where the behaviour is by selecting the option, clicking install, and that is it.

I have attached for you the log file that was produced, I hope that you are able to assist me in this "little issue" that I am experiencing.

Thanks

First mistake, installing the guest additions in the host. They are meant to be installed in the guest.

Second mistake is selection your own settings when creating the guest. You should use the ones presented to you as they are known to work. You can use a larger size for the hard drive but always use the default for everything else until you get the guest installed. Any setting that would need to be changed for performance can be changed later.

Ok, I created a new image, and left everything as default, and just stepped through the wizard.

The problem is still the same! It does not allow me to complete an installation of CentOS. All I do is mount the virtual drive to the iso of centOS, and click on install on the screen. Once the install starts, it then shows the warning message and stops, the installation does not continue and the final step is to shutdown. So, I can't get to the end.

Let's see a new log file with the settings.

Sorry but due to its size I had to compress it for you

Code: Select all

 Guru Meditation 1155 (VINF_EM_TRIPLE_FAULT)
Now we are getting somewhere. Using the default settings you now see the actual error. As I suspected the mouse issue was a red haring the real issue has to do with the triple fault. Most of the ( IMHO ) time this has been caused by a processor type that VirtualBox did address properly.

At this point you would need to post a ticket at bugtracker

With your first log I was concerned that 2GB was too much for a VM when the host only has 2.3GB available. In your second log you seem to have gone too far in the opposite direction: I wouldn't consider 512MB to be the optimal RAM complement for a 64bit PC, in fact 64bit addressing is almost totally pointless if you don't need to address more than 4GB RAM (the only reason for it would be if you had an app that is only available for 64bit platforms).

So, I would try maybe 1.5GB RAM.

Isn't this the Ubuntu repo version too? - which was not the case with the first log posted. It's also 4.3.10 instead of 4.3.12. What's going on?

I don't think having 512 or 2 GB or even 1.5GB would make much difference.

What I tried was two versions of VirtualBox, one version, the 4.3.10 is part of my Linux Mint 17 Distro through Software Manager, the other was a version download from the Oracle website and installed. As you can see, the result is the same.

Ubtuntu version is the same for Linux Mint, Mint is a branch of Ubuntu, the kernels are exactly the same, it is just the frontend that is different.

Linux handles memory much differently than Windows. 512MB is acceptable for normal operation even in 64-bit, unless you actually see swapping in top/htop. Then you can always add more.

But yes Don this is a different version from the Ubuntu distro and I failed to catch that. All bets are off here if the OP does not use the build from VirtualBox.
