Hi,

I have tried installing both Ubuntu 14.04 and Linux Mint 17 on Virtual box and have had problems pertaining to internet connectivity. My host machine in connected via LAN cable, and I have tried both NAT and bridged connections on the guest machine, however, even as the OS shows the internet to be connected, I cannot use Firefox or ping outside the network. Any ideas on how i could fix this?

Does your LAN require you to use a proxy?

I believe so, as I am on my company's network. Not sure how to check this though.
