Odd error after installing new hard disk

I updated a MacBook Pro with os 10.9.3, a larger harddrive, and VirtualBox 4.3.12

I previously had three virtual machines running successfully: Debian 6, Debian 7 and Windows XP.

After updating OS X, and changing the hard drive, Debian 6 runs successfully, but Debian 7 and Windows XP both fail to boot with the same error:
Failed to open a session for the virtual machine Windows XP.
Failed to open image '/Users/arunc/Library/VirtualBox/HardDisks/Windows XP.vdi' for writing due to wrong permissions (VERR_VD_IMAGE_READ_ONLY).
Failed to attach driver below us! Image is read-only. (VERR_VD_IMAGE_READ_ONLY).
PIIX3 cannot attach drive to the Primary Master (VERR_VD_IMAGE_READ_ONLY).
Result Code:
NS_ERROR_FAILURE (0x80004005)
Component:
Console
Interface:
IConsole {8ab7c520-2442-4b66-8d74-4ff1e195d2b6}
I changed the permissions on both the Debian 7 and the Windows XP vdi's to be 666, then 777, made sure the "HardDisk" directory
was readable and writable for all, but no luck: the booting process continued to fail.

I tried a suggested posted on this site to repair the permissions on the hard drive, but that didn't help.

Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Thanks in advance,
