does not see 64 bit

VirtualBox will not allow me to Create A Virtual Machine using 64bit. I start a new Virtual Machine, type in Ubuntu and every thing in the drop-down menu of Version is 32bit. I am sure I have the 64 bit Ubuntu iso.
I have a pre-built computer (may have been a mistake buying this instead of building my own as I usually do-but it was a great price):
Asus m51ac-us006
CPU i5-4570 64bit quad core
using 64bit Windows 8.1
its not seeing the CPU right....I haven't messed with it much, but I don't think VMware is seeing the CPU right either.
I turned on virtualization in the BIOS

Any help greatly appreciated!

First, the Intel i5-4570 is VT-x and VT-d capable. As far as I know VT-x would have to be enabled in order to install and run Windows 8.1 so I'm not sure why you had to enable it in the BIOS. Be that as it may, if you did have to enable it, you should shutdown after any BIOS change for 10 secs or so, then boot your computer. If you have the Pro or Enterprise version of Windows 8.1, you also have to disable Hyper-V in the Windows features panel.

as I mentioned, I believe you have to have VT-x enabled to run Windows 8.1. I didn't say it's not disabled on some boards.

For any of those with a Toshiba machine, there is actually a two-step process for enabling the VT-x.. You must have the Intel Virtualisation Technology set to 'enabled', and there is an Execute-Disable Bit option that you may also have to toggle, in order for virtualbox to run correctly. Hope this helps!

@ramaccio: Just to avoid confusion, I believe you are discussing VM settings, while the OPs issue and subsequent discussion is about a host BIOS setting. But, thank you anyway for trying to help.

actually PerryG mentioned the same issue as far as disabling the Execute-Disable Bit option on some hardware's BIOS. viewtopic.php?f=6&t=62072&p=290210&hili ... it#p290210
