Hi,
I have baked up an old XP physical machine into an ISO a few months ago. The physical machine is now competely out of order and I'd like to crete a virttual machine based on the iso file I got, but I don't really find any tutorial for this.?
Has anybody got one I could use somewhere? Or hints on how to do this?
Thanks ;-)

Moved to "Windows Guests".

An ISO is just an image of a CD/DVD. Such a disk could contain anything, so you haven't provided enough information for us to tell you what to do with it.

The only "ISO" that's useful for installing XP is an image of an XP setup CD. In other words, it's the fact that it's an image of an installation CD that makes it installable, not the fact that it's an image.

Now, if what you really meant was that you have an image of your old hard disk then that would be a different matter - and it wouldn't be an ISO. I would need precise details of how the image was made, and what format it's in.

If all you did was copy a bunch of files onto a CD image, then I'm afraid you can't create an XP image from that.

Apologies if I was imprecise.
I created the image of the entire physical hard drive of an XP machine with the linux tool "dd" from an ubuntu 12.04.4.
If needed and though the rest of the machine is out of order, I still have the hard drive itself which works.

Rename the image file so that it has a .raw extension. Then clone the image using the CloneVDI tool (see "Windows Hosts" forum), making sure to enable the "Compact" option. The result will be a VDI you can build a VM around. Try to get the VM recipe as close as possible to the original hardware, but expect problems getting it to boot. Search these forums for "P2V", you will see discussions of common problems.

I might also mention that if you search the forums for P2V don't use the VirtualBox search as it will not work for 3 letter searches Use the following in your favorite search engine.

Hi All,

Thanks for your help.
In the end I converted the disk into a VHD (with Disk2vhd), then mounted it on an XP install.
As a matter of fact, it wasn't even booting, but after mounting a windows xp iso as a CD and a Windows repair, it worked perfectly.
Thanks for your help.

How did you create the VHD? AFAIK it can't convert from a raw image, yet in your first post you said that the original PC was "completely out of order", presumably meaning no longer available, a premise which I took into account in my replies.
