I installed Ubuntu 14.04 and discovered that upon opening, the vm will not allow me to change display settings. I'm unable to change the resolution from 640x480. Everything shows very large with notice of built-in display?? All of the windows do not scale properly, running off the right hand side of the VM. I've installed the guest additions(4.2.18_88780), checked the display settings, enabled 3D as well as 2D in the settings, but, nothing makes any difference. Its quite annoying.
I've switched to full screen as well as scale mode, but, nothing helps. I'm trying to locate another driver that might help. So far nothing.
Its quite odd behavior.
Any help would be appreciated.

Auto-resizing only works if you have installed the guest additions ( in the guest )
Run the following in the guests terminal window and post the results here
