ubuntu guest networking problem

Hi,

I'm running a ubutnu (12.04) guest under MacOS Maverick. I'm connecting to the guest via ssh in a Mac Terminal window. Oftenly the command line stops responding or responds really slowly. Sometimes it even responds in strange ways like pressing <ENTER> key results in the command line showing the current working DIR. While if I enter commands directly into the VM window everything works normally - no lagging at all.

I've googled and tried many things. I've suspected that it was that the general VM performance wasn't good but it turned out not the case. I've tried all the NIC options in virtualbox network configuration.

I don't know if this matters but the guest was copied from windows 7 - originally it was installed and had been running there for a while.

Anyways here are the specs if it helps:

Guest: ubuntu 12.04 server 32bit, Memory 768MB, 1 CPU, Enable PAE/NX, VT-x/AMD-V, Bridged Adapter en0:Ethernt (my wired NIC), Guest Additonals installed

Seems like some config in your host is being a bottle-neck for the VM, and therefore slows it down (a lot).
I don't know how you can solve this, but at least you know this is due to some limitations. Maybe someone else will know more & answer.

Thanks.

A bit googling led me to this post https://joeshaw.org/2011/09/30/terrible ... -mac-os-x/ I enabled Host IO Cache for the guest and booted it up. I no longer see previous messages in the VB Log.

However the networking problem is still there when I ssh from host to guest. The connection seems to stall regularly and when it happens the "Network" icon at the bottom-right of the guest VB window flashes with a red dot. I'm not sure what that indicates and how to troubleshoot that.

I've attached the updated VBox.log.

PCNet#0: The link is back up again after the restore
PCnet is flaky on everything except Windows XP and a few older OSes. Switch to using VirtIO and see if it improves.

Note the "errors:2" part, every time the problem occurs it seems the number increases.

It looks like the setup is being over burdened. Not much else I can tell you from here and also because I don't have/use a Mac. You might raise a ticket at bugtracker if no one else has a suggestion.

PS leave the network adapter set to VirtIO. It is the best and fastest especially for a Linux guest.
