Bridging using fixed IP addresses (W2k8 =>Ubuntu)
Bridging using fixed IP addresses (W2k8 =>Ubuntu)
Attempting a different approach ... W2K8R2 server running Ubuntu 14.04 in a brand new virtual box. The physical machine has 1 NIC to which N static IP addresses are allocated. I'd like to be able to run a modest LAMP stack in the VM to simplify deployment of Wordpress and friends.
So having reviewed the sadly inconclusive viewtopic.php?f=6&p=154998 I thought I'd start afresh.
The IP address to be used by the VM is not assigned to the physical NIC. The VM is set up using vanilla bridging settings, and internally the OS is configured with a static IP on eth0.
When booted the VM has an apparently good network (see ifconfig below), and the host machine can ping the static IP address. However the same address cannot be pinged from another (remote) machine. Nor can the guest access anything, even though ifconfig reports it is receiving data. nternally (guest side) both ping and traceroute simply time out.
Does the panel have any thoughts on how to proceed? This cannot be such an unusual use-case?
Many thanks
Jerry

What are you bridging on : wired or wireless?

Wired. And it is getting data:

run the following in the host :
Still in the host, but from the VBox install dir, replace with VM name :
And in the guest
Code: Select all
ipconfig /all
route print
arp -a
netsh advfirewall show allprofilesCode: Select all
vboxmanage showvminfo vm_name --detailsCode: Select all
ifconfig -a
route -n
arp
iptables -L -n -vHyperbox - Virtual Infrastructure Manager - https://apps.kamax.lu/hyperbox/

Is this a rented dedicated server or the like? You have an unusual IP config which is typical of them.

Yes. Unusual perhaps in respect of the number of assigned IP4 addresses but ...

Re: Bridging using fixed IP addresses (W2k8 =>Ubuntu)
Based on what you shown so far, I reach the conclusion that the limitation comes from your provider.
It is very common for providers to link extra IP address to the MAC of the server, and route them based on that since they are outside the subnet for the original IP of your physical server.
You gave the IP to a guest, which has a MAC address not known to the provider, and therefore cannot route the traffic to the server.
I know that for some providers, you can request a Virtual MAC, and link the IP to it. You can sometimes give your own MAC, or they give you one.
If they give you one, change the MAC address in the VM config (it will reset your IP configuration in the guest) and try again.

Re: Bridging using fixed IP addresses (W2k8 =>Ubuntu)
OK, thanks. That sounds reasonable given the environment. So I will need to ensure that the VM MAC ID matches the 'virtual' NIC (or possibly more ideally a second NIC)?
I really appreciate the input here. Thanks again.

Big no - never duplicate MAC address, or you'll be in trouble. Solution one is the way.G40 wrote:or possibly more ideally a second NIC)

Re: Bridging using fixed IP addresses (W2k8 =>Ubuntu)
Sadly appears to be impossible as provider cannot/will not supply such virtual NIC.
See viewtopic.php?f=6&t=61867 for a solution.
