[Solved] Finding Post about Internet Access

Hello VirtualBox world,

I'll try to keep this post as short as possible, so if there are other things you need to know, please ask.

This question I am sure has been answered many times, so I'm hoping I can just get a link to a thread that answers what I need to do.

I am trying to set up a guest Linux OS with Windows 8.1 host. I have a USB wireless card, and cannot connect to the Internet from the guest OS. The network icon says that it is connected. I have tried both NAT and bridged connection. From reading through the FAQ, I see that bridged will not work, but neither does NAT.

What I especially don't understand is; I have made over a dozen virtual machines with VirtualBox before, and at least 4 of them on this exact same hardware. Since I upgraded from Windows 8 to 8.1, I am now having this problem. I also tried VMWare, and could not get Internet access through that either, so I am pretty sure this has something to do with 8.1, but I do not know why.

I read over all relevant material in the FAQ. I would provide a link, but I cannot do so due to forum requirements.

And have read through at least 6 other postings about connectivity problems. I can provide links to those if it will help.

I hope that I can learn enough about virtual machines to help the community out.

Any helpful input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

- Did you try with disabling firewalls in host & guests?
- Did you upgrade from 8 to 8.1 or did you reinstall 8.1?
- Which version of Virtualbox are you using?
- What is the Linux distro and version you are using exactly?

In the host, in a command prompt :

Code: Select all

ipconfig /all
route print
ping 8.8.8.8
nslookup 8.8.8.8
In the guest :

Code: Select all

ifconfig -a
route -n
ping 8.8.8.8
nslookup 8.8.8.8

Disabling the firewall worked. Thanks!

What do I need to do now to get it so I can have the firewall up and use my machine?

Actually, I enabled Windows Firewall, and I am still able to access the Internet. I am posting this from my guest OS.

What happened? Am I going to lose Internet access again soon?

What you need to do is configure your firewall properly, but that is out of scope of this forum.
General rule : Make sure the Virtualbox process is in the white list.

That is what is so odd. It has been whitelisted this whole time.

Thank you again for your help. You can list this as solved.

Sorry to post in here again,

After several days of the Internet working, it suddenly stopped once again.

I disabled my firewalls just as I had in the past, only this time it did not help. I have not changed any settings whatsoever, aside from the firewall.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Facey

You can provide the diagnostic info I posted before, they are still valid and the only way to troubleshoot a network issue.

Next post will be the diagnostics for the guest OS, once I figure out the ability to cut and paste to and from. I was trying to avoid using VBoxadditions for security reasons. I guess that isn't going to be an option now. :(

Hmm... this problem is new too:

I don't have "Devices" as an option anymore either. Should I post another thread for help with this?

The only options are "File" "Machine" and "Help" as you can see in the screen shot provided.

From what I can see, your network configuration is a bit odd, and you have VMware stuff running. They could conflict with Virtualbox, especially the part where you indicate the host itself as DNS server.
I guess you have a DNS proxy running or something like that? if not, you need to configure your interfaces correctly in the host... But this is out of scope of the Virtualbox forum.

The devices menu is on the guest/s window, not the main manager.

Hi,

The Device's menu isn't there either. Please see attached photo.

Also, I do have a server that is connected via Fillezilla. That is probably what you are seeing.

Thanks for your help thus far. Where do I need to go to get help with my networking?

EDIT: I figured out the problem. For some reason, Filezilla was interfering with Virtualbox. Would you have any idea as to why that would be?

That sounds like a false positive. If you only open Filezilla, and do nothing at all with it, then use your VM, does it still break the network? or do you need do file transfers for it to break?
