printer problems with VB on WinXP

Post by atlantis43 »

I'm new to VB, and am wondering if anyone can help me with proper printer setup on my WinXP host.
Problems I'm having are:
1)I'm getting very slow response from my printer when I try to print from VM, and unable to print at all from usual XP apps while VM is running. Is there something that I have to change in my VM settings to enable proper function?

2)I don't use colored inks in my printer, and reserved words are color-coded on gedit pages. How can I turn off color-coding in gedit, so that all will appear in Black & White, so that I can effectively print direct from Gedit?

Thanks.

How is the printer attached to the VM? The worst thing you could do is try to assign ownership to the VM using a USB filter, however that does seem to match your symptoms. USB doesn't cater for sharing a port between two or more PCs.

A better solution is to set up a printer share - you can Google for info on that.

Ok, so I think I succeeded in "unattaching"( and thanks for the recommendation)?
I looked up "sharing, but I'm not sure that my PC, which is not networked, will be able to support such a feature. Any comments as to this?
Also, second part of question remains unanswered (since I expect that, even with "printer share", I'll have the same problem with the colored fonts.

The host PC has no internet connection? Are you using a different PC for this communication?

You would use bridged or host only (virtual) networking for the printer sharing purpose. The former requires a physical network, the latter is entirely virtual. Any PC with VirtualBox installed on it has access to several forms of virtual network, as discussed in the user manual.

I'm afraid we don't do "gedit" support here, so your questions on that issue will lkely remain unanswered, unless you can explain the possible relevance to a VirtualBox support forum.
