On attempting to install Windows 7 guest, it starts (“Windows is loading files...”), but aborts in 5 seconds saying the CPU is not 64-bit compatible.
System just built, all new components
GA Z87x UD5H, 16GB RAM, virtual mode enabled, acceleration enabled
i4770 CPU
Host: Linux Mint 16, Cinnamin, 64-bit version
Guest: Windows 7 Home Premium installation CD, 64-bit version, 512MB (default) assigned
VirtualBox v4.3.0 r89960

I must be overlooking something simple.

Two things:
  • VirtualBox is now in version 4.3.12. But, in reality the problem is...
  • Under VM Settings, General, Basic, Version, select "Windows 7 (64-bit)" as your guest.

Yep, I overlooked something simple all right. When I entered "Windows 7" in the name field, "Windows 7" also popped up in the OS selection field, so I figured I was good to go and never even opened that menu. Dumb?
Oh well, I hope this helps someone else to not be so dumb. I'm up and running - thanks.
