CD/DVD Disk Burning

Post by Thysmith »

Hi all!

I am getting a strange issue with a Windows XP Guest on a Windows 7 Host. Sometimes when I go to burn a CD (One of this systems primary tasks) it will crash during the closing part of the burn process. I find in the logs I get a bunch of the same error.

PIIX3 ATA: LUN#0: CD-ROM passthrough cmd=0x28 sense=5 ASC=0x64 ASCQ=0x0 VERR_DEV_IO_ERROR

The strange thing is, I can get this to work for weeks at a time but then it will revert to this again, without changing anything other then a restart of the guest. I have also tried using a USB DVD burner with the same result.
CD drive is setup on a SATA controller with passthrough enabled. Any thoughts? Thank you for any help!

Why a SATA controller? The IDE controller is better tested and costs you nothing to use. In the end however, the passthrough mode is experimental, so not guaranteed to work. Unless you can describe a repeatable crash to the devs I doubt there's much they can do.

IDE Didn't want to work at all. I started there and did a bunch of testing it failed every time. SATA at least worked flawlessly sometimes... Back to the drawing board, just hoping someone had any ideas. Thanks for taking a look.
