I can not extend image using vboxmanage
I can not extend image using vboxmanage
Hi,
I did before extend the image size using vboxmanage as descried here but now when I tried again I get percent numbers until 100% in like 1 sec, the command return immediately then when I log into windows then open computer management console then disk management I dont see any space to allocate !!
I suspect that might because image type is multi-attach then I set it to normal and tried the command again but got the exact same result.
What is wrong ?

Re: I can not extend image using vboxmanage
Tried again now by typing the vdi image name without full path like c:\folder1\folder2\myimage.vdi but I got this error
What does this mean ? any solution ?Progress state: VBOX_E_NOT_SUPPORTED
VBoxManage.exe: error: Resize hard disk operation for this format is not implemented yet!

Re: I can not extend image using vboxmanage
The most common reason is that you haven't read the docs, and are trying to set a new size less than the old size.
Re: I can not extend image using vboxmanage
I read here in the forum "Board index General Howtos and Tutorials Generic Advice" the topic titled "How to resize a Virtual Drive" , is it enough ? I just can not post the address because of forum rules.
I did this before but now when I tried size 37000 to have almost like 37 GB as I read it is in MB but I get the error above then I tried now 370000 I get the percentage numbers without any effect !! so when I use 37000 is it 37 GB or not ? and why I dont see anything happen when I use 370000 ?
Current image size is 27 GB.

Re: I can not extend image using vboxmanage
I don't know if this is what is going wrong for you but the only time I ever had the resize function go to 100% in one sec was when I accidentally typed the wrong path. I assume a typo of any kind might do the same thing. well not of any kind.

Re: I can not extend image using vboxmanage
try this...
open the Command Prompt, type in the first part of the command
then drag the .vdi file you are trying to resize into the command prompt window. put quotes around the file path, then type in the rest of the command.
return.
open the Command Prompt, type in the first part of the command
Code: Select all
VBoxManage modifyhdCode: Select all
--resize 37000OSX, Linux and Windows Hosts & Guests

Re: I can not extend image using vboxmanage
Perhaps you might find it easier to use CloneVDI.
Re: I can not extend image using vboxmanage
Thanks loukingjr I already did that, same problem.
mpack,
I also tried this and got the message that I am doing smaller size error, this with the 37000 or 40000. Thank GOD I took backup before doing this but for information only is there anything I can do for this image to fix its size ?

Re: I can not extend image using vboxmanage
If CloneVDI is telling you that the disk is already larger than your selection, then the disk is already larger than your selection.
If you select "Show Header" in CloneVDI then it will tell you the current disk size.
You said that you had read the tutorial. I take it then that you understand that resizing a VM that uses snapshots is difficult and that, after the disk is successfully enlarged, you need to run GParted (or other partition manager) inside the guest to make the extra space available to the guest OS.

Re: I can not extend image using vboxmanage
I did not notice that this image has snapshot, I cloned the backup image and now resize work normally. The image I was trying to resize has very large size and when I log into windows I dont see this space to allocate with any partition tool, not sure what happen however for information only is there any way to fix this image and reset its size to smaller number ?

There is no way to shrink a .vdi file.

You're welcome. You'll just have to use the backup.Will70 wrote: Thanks.
