[solved] Critical Error - Ubuntu Guest on W2k3 server host

Post by garrilla »

I'm trying to install Ubuntu 64 (14.10) guest on to W2k3 64bit server (Dual Xeon 5050, 24gb ram, 300+gb spare HDD).

- create the guest (with all recommended defaults)
- start the guest
- follow path to ISO

ubuntu installer starts
- select language (English in my case)
- select 'install ubuntu server'

the window goes black and the critical error appears saying come to the forum and post the log (zipped & attached)

can anyone help?

Try turning off PAE/NX in the VM settings?

Also, it seems to be OK if run 4.2.24...

So (at a guess) it must be 4.3.x issue

Well, it may just be the CPU. The Xeon 5050 seems to be quite old, particularly early days for a VT-x capable chip. I.e. it seems to have been EOLed in 2008.

4.3.x implemented a new VT-x engine. It's quite possible that support for older VT-x implementations was broken at that time. You could post a BugTracker ticket about this, but unless the fix is very simple I have my doubts it would be considered a priority.

OK, many thanks.

What are the big differences (apart from the vt-x engine) between 4.2.24 and 4.3.x ?

That's really a question for the devs. However you can view the changelog from the download page.

I posted a ticket and crossed my fingers...

luck came good and I got a build that works with 13.10 (although 14.04 still critical)
