frequent black out screen on windows 8.1 guest

Post by gg99 »

on my window 8.1 host core 2 quad system, I recently updated virtual box to the latest version 4.3.10.r93012. I then proceed to install a new windows 8.1 guest with 2 GB of ram, 128K Video ram.
after installation and update, I installed vmaddition to the w 8.1 vm. I have tried and removed 2d+3d combination to the vm. however the vm's screen goes black still often and once in a while, it freeze after turning black and send me to login (must have crashed).

I wonder if anyone that experienced this black screen and found a fix

I removed windows animation from vm. set for best performance. turn off all animation feature from firefox.
I applied the latest windows security update and 8.1 platform update. shutdown the vm. made sure 2d 3d acceleration were removed for vm. restart virtual box.
still seem to have same problems.
shutdown all vm. close virtualbox. reboot host.
start virtualbox which seem to hang for a minute or two.

However once started, I was able to startup the problematic vm and I see less screen black out so far.

update:2014-06-14 after putting the host to sleep last night. wake up the pc with only one display turn on. the problematic was on the right hand display that I for to turn on. later when I turn on the right hand display, and brought forth the vm to foreground. the VM got stuck in the the black screen no matter what I do. host key..., machine menu-inserthostkey. moving the mouse on the the screen. start menu key were ignored. clicking on the black screen saving and restoring the vm. send vm shutdown signal - ignored

finally I gave up and power off vm and start it up again which worked a little while but hibernating the host pc will render the vm unusable until hard shutdown and restart from VB.

update: 2014-08-28 after the latest security update, black out frequency got worse. suppress turning off screen from the VM when plugged in, pared down windows features:
- print and document services to only windows fax and scan, no internet print client
- removed iis.. and any other unneeded components like advanced svc for .net framework 4.5
- make sure system setting is for best performance - no animation....
I got stable 8.1 for now. don't know what happens with next security update.
