Installing OS X guest under OS X host

For me, computers were always just a tool. A means to an end. To create music and art. I wasn't so much interested in tweaking my computers as I was in what software I could run on them. I was a commercial artist for many years and owned my own computer graphics company, I was also a professional musician for approximately 30 years and enjoyed the ease I could construct music utilizing a computer.

My interest in VirtualBox started because of friends who ran other OSs and would ask for help. Of course it was much easier for me to explain things to them if I had the OS in front of me.

At any rate, I'm glad VB 4.3.12 seems to be working for you.

Most software and hardware vendors nowadays seem to be hellbent to create minimalistic products, sometimes to a level where common sense and intuition does no longer work, and therefore in my opinion the product itself is no longer useful. The way I see it, computers should be designed for humans, not the other way around. But I guess the current trend is great to reduce development and support costs and to maximize profit, and perhaps reinventing the wheel.

Universal tools and solutions are great for the majority of the clueless, but not necessarily the most productive or most efficient way for professionals to work with. I therefore consider tweaking and customizing to a certain extend being a necessity, which is also the way how humans are, speaking of liberty and strive for individualism.

I can also use a typewriter. Nothing against Linux, it’s a great server OS and I’m very familiar with it, but seriously, I can think of better alternatives for an end-user or desktop system, such as Mac OS X, provided the current trend of dumbing down the user interface will not continue.

Any special recipe on how you got 10.6.8 working? I installed Mac OS X 10.6 in a VM using a standard 10.6 install DVD, and it worked great...until I ran Software Update in the VM and updated to 10.6.8. Now the VM crashes on boot. I've tried PIIX3 and ICH9 chipsets. Have it set to 1 CPU, 2GB memory, 128MB VRAM.

Yes! That worked. I can't believe I couldn't come up with that simple little command line on my own. :/

Now, if I can ever figure out what exactly that hex string means, I'll be a much smarter bird.

The configuration options for any Mac OS X VM should really include a way to specify the "vintage" of the hardware that is presented to the guest OS.
