64 Bit Guest Problems (Oracle Linux)

Post by PicklesDP »

I am new to VirtialBox and I am trying to use VirtualBox to test out the oracle 12 database. I am using windows 7 pro 64 bit OS running on the recently released AMD Kaveri A10-7850K processor.

I have installed virtualBox 4.3.10 and for fun I have successfully installed windows XP as a guest.

But I cannot create an Oracle Linux 64 bit guest machine. During the linux install virtualbox locks up the whole PC, or causes a blue screen of death, or gives a generic unable to load a package failure message. It is the only time I have seen a blue sceeen of death on windows 7!

I have tried to install Oracle Linux 6.4 and also 6.5 multiple times using different copies of the install media. At least one copy of the install media has been used to successfully install Oracle Linux 6.4 on a different (intel) machine. I could not find a specific AMD version of VirtualBox or the Oracle Linux install media.

Does anybody have any idea what the issue could be?

Is there something I need to do or set up to get 64 bit guests to work?

Is virtualBox incompatible with the AMD A10-7850K processor ?

Are 64 bit guests incompatible with the AMD A10-7850K processor ?

Is Oracle Linux incompatible with the AMD A10-7850K processor ?

At the moment the only option appears to be to replace the motherboard and processor with an intel based CPU, which is going to be expensive.

you need to enable AMD-V in the host machine's BIOS/CMOS Settings in order to run 64bit guests. How you do that varies by manufacturer.
