Machine with XP starts, but then black screen only

Post by pcpro »

I made a machine from an old XP computer.
Its a VHD-file and i got pretty large, 370GB

Then I installed VirtualBox on a Windows 7 machine.
The same one that before held the XP installation.

It has only 2GB RAM its not tha fastest PC...

Starting the machine with the old XP VHD is working, in the beginning...
I get the Windows XP logo and start animaton,
But after a while the screen turns black and nothing more happens.

It's most probably hardware driver incompatibilities between your actual computer and the virtualized computer presented by VirtualBox. If you see the Windows animated logo that means that your hard drive controller is working. Where it fails (I guess) is the graphics adapter. Try to start in safe mode (F8 during startup) and install the VirtualBox Guest Additions (look in the manual for instructions).
Do NOT send me Personal Messages (PMs) for troubleshooting, they are simply deleted.
Do NOT reply with the "QUOTE" button, please use the "POST REPLY", at the bottom of the form.
If you obfuscate any information requested, I will obfuscate my response. These are virtual UUIDs, not real ones.

Yes, it worked in safe mode after a few tries.
And installing drivers that was asked for.

I installed Guest addons.
I can share a USB.
But a shared folder doesnt seem to work...

And when starting normally results in a new windows activation, so I can not login.
It works in Failsafe mode though.
Doesnt matter that much, Im only going to copy some files, and then delete the machine I think.

The hardware has changed significantly, so it will certainly want to be reactivated - no way around that, and anyway usually not a problem - just reactivate.

The most common reason for GA shared folders not working is that you haven't installed the GAs, you only mounted the GAs CD. USB doesn't require the GAs, so USB working is not evidence that the GAs are installed.
