Screen resolution on Windows Server 2012 guest on MacOS Host

I have a MacBook Pro 13" with the retina screen and a theoretical resolution of 2560x1600. However, in my Windows Server 2012 guest I can only choose resolutions up to 1280x800.

I have tried everything that the Internet suggests:

* Installed guest additions. Caused me to only be able to choose 1280x800, previously I could choose higher resolutions but I got scrollbars.
* Ran
VBoxManage setextradata global GUI/MaxGuestResolution any
and
VBoxManage.exe setextradata "<VM Name>" CustomVideoMode1 2560x1600x32
. After doing this, many more video modes appeared in my guest, but whenever I choose one of them the only effect is that I only see the top left part of the window until I go in and out of fullsscreen, at which point the 1280x800 resolution is restored
* Ran
VBoxManage controlvm <VMName> setvideomodehint 2560 1600 32
. This seemed to have no effect whatsoever.

When I connect my external monitor, I have no problem setting the VM screen resolution to the native resolution of that monitor.

I have noticed that the guest VM thinks the monitor is a "Generic Non-PnP Monitor".

Running VirtualBox 4.3.10 r93012 on OSX 10.9.2. Guest is Windows Server 2012 Standard.

to make a long story short, you can't run a guest at more than 1280x800 while running at Retina resolution. You can play with the display settings in System Preferences or use a third party hack.

Here is some info... Retina Info

ok, so how did you get 1280x800 as i can only get 1024x768 on my retina screen ??

I'd love to run my WinXP guest in full screen at 1280x800 res.. it would solve all my problems.
