Invalid version number downloaded
Invalid version number downloaded
I was having a problem with Virtualbox version 4.3.10 on 64-bit Windows 7 Pro host, which was preventing me from installing Guest Additions on Windows guests. The problem was fixed, but in doing so I discovered a puzzling fact, and I really want to get an explanation about it. In the process of troubleshooting, I decided to download the Guest Additions again, uninstall and reinstall, etc. When I downloaded the second time, I found that the version downloaded was "VirtualBox-4.3.10-93012-Win.exe", together with the same number for Extension Pack. However, I then noticed that the first downloaded version of these two files was "VirtualBox-4.3.10-92957-Win.exe". I don't understand why the numbers are different, and I was expecting to download the same thing on the second time. Is there a valid reason for different numbers like this?

Re: Invalid version number downloaded
VirtualBox-4.3.10-92957-Win.exe was broken and VirtualBox-4.3.10-93012-Win.exe is the corrected version.

Indeed it was, and this might have caused my difficulty. When I looked at the changelog while doing the second download, I did not see anything mentioning the first one. Why was that not shown as well? Removing part of the history has effect of leaving us to wonder whether we might have been subject of MIM attack.loukingjr wrote:VirtualBox-4.3.10-92957-Win.exe was broken and ...

It's not uncommon for a corrected version of an application to come out on the same or next day. It was mentioned at the time in multiple posts on this forum. you're also talking about something that happened two months ago. I can't say why you are just finding out about it now.macro wrote: Indeed it was, and this might have caused my difficulty. I only installed the program on a testing machine, not one used for a regular production environment. So you probably play around with this hypervisor more than we need it, I suppose?

Re: Invalid version number downloaded
Every version released, e.g. 4.3.10 has a discussion thread associated with it, where problems such as this are raised. I suggest that it's a good idea for you to read the release discussions in future, even if you don't intend to use VBox a lot. A little effort can save much wasted time.

I'll definitely keep that in mind. Nevertheless, a change-log for revisions is what I have found to be the norm in most cases, which is where I did look but found nothing. A little effort there would have saved some of this time as well. Thanks for pointing out the link.

Re: Invalid version number downloaded
I'm not sure I understand this statement. Since you weren't aware of the correction made to the 4.3.10 version for two months, how would including in the corrected version of the changelog the difference between 4.3.10-92957 and 4.3.10-93012 helped you since you wouldn't have read it? They are obviously different versions.macro wrote: I'll definitely keep that in mind.
