VirtualBox extension will not install for 4.3.10

Post by bug-me-not »

I have VirtualBox 4.3.10 within a Windows 7 Host & a Windows XP Guest. I recently upgraded to the latest version & when I went to upgrade the Extension Pack, it gave me an error.

It gets to the part where I agree to the terms & the star logo appears next to the progress bar, but before it passes 0% an error appears (below). I've tried manually downloading & then running the extension pack, but the process is the same. Is there anything I can do to force the install? In the meantime I cannot use VRDP. I'm guessing it's a result of the non-compliant extension.

I can't post links, but the image is here. Just remove the spaces: goo . gl / yvKZH2
Failed to install the Extension Pack C:/Users/admin/.VirtualBox/Oracle_VM_VirtualBox_Extension_Pack-4.3.10.vbox-extpack.

The installer failed with exit code 1: VBoxExtPackHelperApp.exe: error: Failed to rename the extension pack directory: VERR_ALREADY_EXISTS

Your problem is with the install, not the download, so you might want to correct it in the title if you can.

I had the same problem, and the way I worked around it is as follows:
1) Download the extension pack and save it as a file.
2) Find the "Command Prompt" icon in the Start menu.
3) Right click on it and select "Run as administrator". The terminal window should say
"Administrator: Command Prompt" on the title bar.
4) In the terminal window CD to the directory where you saved the file.
5) Type the name of the pack and hit <enter>.

A VirtualBox manager window will appear and run with admin privileges to complete the install.

Good point, I've just changed the title. However, I am coming across the same issues when I do it that way.

I should mention that it tells me that my current version is newer than the upgrade & asks if I want to downgrade. Which is impossible. Is there a way for me to completely remove old extension packs?

Open VirtualBox, open preferences, then the extensions tab, highlight the extensions pack, click the remove icon (minus sign)

edit: something went wrong with your install at some point. there is no such thing as a version of the extension pack named "r0" as listed next to current version in your screen shot. It should list the last version you installed.

Nice, now we're narrowing it down.

Attempting to manually remove that extension results in a similar error message.

Can I manually delete the extension from a config file somewhere?

Thanks all, I wound up uninstalling & reinstalling Virtualbox. Not the route I wanted to go, but definitely the easiest.
