Can't drag-drop to Ubuntu 14.04 with only one processor

Post by finnzk »

I've run into a curious problem:

I can't drag and drop files from my Mac OS host (10.9.2) to a Ubuntu 14.04LTS guest when only one processor is enabled. The guest additions are installed, and this is running in VBox 4.3.10. If I bump the proc count to 2 or higher, drag-and-drop starts working again.

Any ideas?

well the obvious one is drag n drop works better with 2 cores assigned. I'm going to test mine and see.

yep, drag and drop only works with 2 cores or more.

Ok, thanks for confirming this. Drag and drop *previously* worked in Ubuntu 12.04LTS (again under OS X 10.9.2 host, with VirtualBox 4.3.10) with only one core assigned to the guest. So my followup question (which I realize may not by answerable without more info) is "why?" - that is, is this due to some change in Ubuntu, something explicitly being disallowed by VirtualBox, or a bug?

I suspect it's the overhead of Ubuntu 14.04. I can drag and drop to Xubuntu 14.04 with one core.

it seems it may also have to do with the size of the file and the OS. I was just testing PCLOS Mate and I can drag and drop images no problem but if I try and drag a file over 7 MB no dice no matter if it's 1 or 2 cores.

Edit: Fedora needs two cores.
Edit: Debian 7 with Gnome 3 won't work at all.

Oooh, also: If I install gnome-settings-flashback in a clean 14.04LTS (well, with guest extensions, too) and log out / log back in with Gnome Flashback (Metacity), drag and drop works again with only one core (at least for small files).

Seems a bit hit and miss at this point. It is considered experimental I believe.
