[SOLVED] VB4.3.10 UBUNTU no WIFI+no SHARED FOLDER+copy/paste

Host Linux: VirtualBox 4.3.10 + GuestExtensionPack 4.3.10
wifi by usb key
Guests : Ubuntu 12.04, Ubuntu 14.4, Windows XP (this one as a reference : everything working fine, including shared folder !)
shared folder (on every guest) : name=share, auto-mount & full access

I just upgraded Virtualbox from 4.1.18 and created guest Ubuntu 14.4
With previous version of VB it worked fine with guests ubuntu 12.04

now,
-WIFI is not working on either of the ubuntu guests but is working on guest windows.

- copy/paste between guest & host is working on guest ubuntu 12.04 but not on guest ubuntu 14.4

- guest ubuntu 14.4 display is stuck with low resolution wich cannot be changed. Maybe a bug ? It was reported as which had been corrected.

[SOLVED]
- on both guest ubuntu I cannot access my shared folder :
1) ubuntu 12.04 : "share" is mounted as vboxsf owner root on /media/sf_share and I failed to either, chown or chmod or mount -bind, it to get access inside.
I tried to umount & mount again [ mount -t vboxsf -o uid=1000,gid=1000 share /$HOME/linuxhost] but I got an "internal error"
2) ubuntu 14.4 "share" is not mounted so I tried to mount it [ mount -t vboxsf -o uid=1000,gid=1000 share /$HOME/linuxhost]
but I got again an error [mounting failed with error : no such device]

So I'm trying to get at least one of my guest Ubuntu to work. Could anyone help on any of these issues : wifi and access to shared folder on at least one of my guest ?

Thanks for any help.

I found the answer about shared folder access posted in another thread :

Debian based machines seem to have changed the location of the install, pointing to location that does not exist.

Look at /sbin/mount.vboxsf and see if the link is broken, and see if the Guest additions are installed in /opt, and if so see below.

The work-a-round is to run the following in a terminal on the guest.

Code: Select all

 sudo ln -s /opt/VBoxGuestAdditions-4.3.10/lib/VBoxGuestAdditions /usr/lib/VBoxGuestAdditions
There remains the big problem of the wifi not working. I have added a wifi connexion and registered its parameters, but I can't select it. I can only select the ethernet connexion.

Can anyone help with that?

Not only is WiFi not working, it doesn't exist.

How exactly did you go about adding a "wifi connexion"?

And you're trying to select it where?

I used "Edit Connections ..." which appears in the "Network Manager" (left of the taskbar) to add wifi connexion. When the window opens there is a tab wireless where you can set the parameters (SSID, mode, ..., IPV4,IPV6,security).

But I can't select it because no wireless connexion appears in the "Network Manager" as it should. There is no "Enable Wireless" or "Create New Wireless Network ..." in it either.

As you said it is as if WIFI doesn't exist !That is in guest Ubuntu 12.04.

But it works fine in my guest Ubuntu 14.4 [contrarely to what I wrote in my 1st post - I must have been sleepy when wrote it !]. Unfortunately I cannot well use this one because of the low resolution problem. So back to Ubuntu 12.04.

guests have no wi-fi card. guests are 'virtual'. they connect to the outside world through the host. in the virtualbox settings for the guest you need to use NAT or bridged or whatever your need is. You can't create a working wi-fi connection in a guest.

as far as copy and paste, you need to set the options for your Ubuntu 14.04 guest in the VirtualBox settings for the clipboard. Bi-directional would be a good choica

THANK YOU so, so much loukingjr ! You solved my "problem" which I had created myself ... Because it all happened at the same time : got a new box, upgraded VB and had a problem to connect to internet. Whatever was my problem at the time it had nothing to do with wifi. All the time I tried to create a wireless connection to connect with, when I had my wired connection (as seen in the guest) working !

As to my Ubuntu 14.04 it's more tricky as I found that I cannot copy/paste, nor can access shared folder, because I have no GuestAdditions ! So I'll open another thread about this problem.
