differencing disks

Post by sk8dancer »

After reading the description of virtual disks and differencing disks I tried to attach an existing disk to a second machine. As expected I was told a differencing disk would be created since the selected disk image was already attached to a different machine. The parent disk had several snapshots (actually a bunch but ...) which are themselves differencing disks according to the documentation. I went into the Virtiual media manager to see just what had happened and was surprise by the following

Code: Select all

MyDisk.vdi
xxx...xxx.vdi <<< this is the one attached to the second machine.
  aaa...aaa.vdi
     bbb...bbb.vdi
        ccc...ccc.vdi
           <...>
rrr...rrr.vdi <<< this is the one attached to the original machine (i think)
                                <<< this is where I expected xxx...xxx.vdi
I expected xxx...xxx.vdi to be under rrr...rrr.vdi just like the snapshots were!
Did I do something wrong? Should I have gone and found the snapshot that I wanted to branch from?

Yes. You'll always branch from the specific disk you selected, not from the latest child of that disk.
