Virtual Box won't recognize more hard drive space

On a win7 host I am running a Ubuntu guest. Using the Vboxmange command modifyhd,I have successfully expanded the virtual space to 53 GB. However when I boot from a ubuntu ios and run gparted it will not acknowledge any unallocated space. I have checked and the Virtual Machine setting and it has dynamic memory enabled. The vdi that runs the machine however was originally created on a different physical machine if that matters.

Download the gparted live CD and mount it in the guests CD/DVD virtual drive and then boot the guest.
Does it still not see the added disk space?

What was the original size and what did you decide to change it too?

Post the results of the following from the hosts command window. (note: you will need to be in the directory that has VBoxManage.exe for the command to work)

Code: Select all

VBoxManage showhdinfo <absolute path including the .vdi>

It read
C:\VM\VirtualBox>VboxManage showhdinfo C:\VM\DATA\Server.vdi
UUID: deff8b90-b288-4ed4-bd99-df1286a0fe64
Parent UUID: base
State: locked read

Location: C:\VM\DATA\Server.vdi

I have noticed however a uuid error in ubutu host that a partion is not mounting correctly. It apperas at boot and says "the disk drive for uuid for/> is not ready or not present"

This looks right enough.

Post the following from the guests terminal

Code: Select all

df -h

You don't have any snapshots do you?

guest read

Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on

udev 1.5G 4.0K 1.5G 1% /dev
tmpfs 301M 880K 301M 1% /run
none 5.0M 0 5.0M 0% /run/lock
none 1.5G 76K 1.5G 1% /run/shm

I fixed the simple mount error and yes I have a snapshots but this machine is relatively new and I haven't preformed any major changes besides the hard drive expansion. So i don't believe a snapshot would do much good.

I have managed to find a very early snap shot that allows the use of the unallocated space so i believe I will just restore back to there and then fix what needs fixing, unless you have any major fix ideas. The only idea would have it somehow it temporally got set to a solid state drive and that messed up space recognition. Thank you for all your help.
