VRDE works w/ Win7 Remote Desktop, not Linux rdesktop?

Hi all,
Did a headless install of a Linux-based appliance using a VBox VM on a Slackware 14.1 host. The install seemed to work properly. When I started the VM using the VBoxHeadless command, I received the proper output and notification that VRDE was listening on port 3389. When I used rdesktop from a Linux box, the install screen for the appliance appeared in the rdesktop box but the keyboard did nothing...I had to kill the rdesktop session using ctrl-C. After messing with various options for an hour or so, I decided to try using a laptop running Win7. I fired up the Remoted Desktop client, filled in the proper info, and boom, I had a funtioning connection to the install screen of my VM appliance on the other machine. I completed the install and everything works well.
So, why does the Win7 Remote Desktop client work while the rdesktop client in a Slackware Linux machine fails?
Thanks for your thoughts!
