i there,
Anyone can help me?
I have the same problem like others on windows 7 (64 bit prof) host, virtualbox using linux.
I've done advices from
viewtopic.php?f=6&t=39104
(delete registry key, install usb driver manually, reboot the virtualbox)
but not working still.
Strange thing is that USB keyboard + mouse are working fine, only the usb stick / memory (2.0), even I have put it on different slots.
After that, even my windows host cannot access usb thumb drive anymore until i reboot the laptop to fix it. My virtualbox however can't read the usb.
I've installed virtualbox gues addition + extensionpack (latest version 3.10), but they dont' fix the problem.
Here is the error detail:
Failed to attach the USB device LaCie iamaKey [1100] to the virtual machine puppy4.

Follow the steps below. If there is a failure, please state which step failed:
- Make sure that the Extension Pack is installed on the host. The same version as VirtualBox.
- Create a USB filter in your guest settings while the device is plugged in the host. Delete all values except VendorID and ProductID.
- Unplug the device.
- Start your guest (the one that you applied the filter to). Let it start completely. Log in if you have to.
- Plug your device. The filter should capture it and pass control to your guest.
- If the device shows up in your host and is not captured by the filter, either the filter is incorrect, or there might be a problem with your filter installation.
- If the device shows up, but as unavailable, "eject" it from your host, but leave it plugged in. It should show up as available.
- Are you by any chance using a USB 3.0 port?
- Is the VirtualBox USB Driver installed in your host?
- If on a Linux host, are you a member of the 'vboxusers' group?
- Check out these two Windows-specific ways to troubleshoot potential driver installation issues:

Re: guest can't access USB thumb drive
hi Socratis,
Thanks for the long answer. I've done all my best reading many postings, try this & that but with no success.
I believe many others also have problems accessing their usb drive from virtualbox guest.
I even have tried remote usb, but no success.
So, I would say fail your step 5. After plugging the USB, i can see its name in the filter list.
But, it always says fail to connect, busy....
1. I've checked my extension pack installed (it is checked in the setting).
2. i also see that guestaddition is installed properoly.
3. i've unchecked booting from bios in my laptop.
4. confirm this is usb 2.0,
5. have tried different usb drive on different ports,
Despite all those efforts above, plus delete registry, re-install don't help at all.
Any idea or suggestion for me ? thanks again Socratis.

Re: guest can't access USB thumb drive
I've tried to use ubuntu, but it has the same result as soon as a usb drive is plugged in.
The host can't access it and the ubuntu guest can't access it either.
It says fail to access as busy with previous....
I've tried a different linux os such as puppy linux, both result the same error.
So, this error is the incompatibility of virtualbox.
Unlike virtual pc by windows, it is so seamless both mouse & usb drive.
Virtualbox is so difficult and not user friendly.
Even mouse movement, i have to press ctr + I many times to make its position accurate.

Re: guest can't access USB thumb drive
To be honest I've never created a USB filter before. I just had no use for plugging USB drives in and out or using a thumb drive in a guest. After reading your post I decided to see how hard it really was. Well, I created a filter and mounted a 32GB USB LaCie Thumb Drive in Xubuntu 14.04 LTS in less than 2 minutes. Maybe 1.5 minutes. And this is on a Mac host which is supposed to be finicky.
