Installer fails on Windows 2000 (VB 1.6)

Post by MarkusW »

I'm trying to install Virtualbox 1.6 on a Windows 2000 machine (no service pack for performance reasons). It tells me I have to use a newer version of Windows Installer.

BUT: As the manual states on page 15 "Windows Installer 1.1 or higher must be present on your system". My msiexec.exe is version 1.10.1029.0.

I also tried it on another machine that runs Windows 2000 SP4 and got the message: "This application only runs on Windows XP or above".

Not funny.

It seems Win2K got dropped off the supported hosts list. Maybe some of the OSE community can whip something up for you guys.

On an unrelated note.. "performance reasons"? I've heard some wacky reasons not to install a service pack, but that's a doozy. If your system is so slow that installing a service pack threatens to push it beyond usability, what are you doing putting virtualization software on it?

SP4 wouldn't push my system beyond usability. The reason that I'm not willing to install any service pack has nothing to do with virtualisation software, too. It's more general.

Windows 2000 becomes slower when you install SP4. You will notice this especially but not only on older hardware. XP SP0 is already slower than Win2k SP4. XP SP2 is again slower than XP SP0. You can continue this story...

There are many things improved in each service pack, even more in XP and Vista. However, I don't need them. So why slow down my PC?

I like my machines to be as fast as possible. Therefore all services and autostart programs I dont' need are deactivated.

You may call it "wacky". I'd call it reasonable.
