solved - VirtualBox GuestAdditions - Hos: Mac, Guest: Wheezy

Post by Hyper »

Hi there,

I´ve been trying to install the GuestAdditions for a week nor and there is no Tutorial I haven´t tried withiut success...
I use a MacBook Pro with the latest OS X 10.9.2. VirtualBox is version 4.3.10. As Guest I installed Debian Wheezy 7.4.0 (64 bit).

I´d like to install GuestAdditions, in order to use cut-copy-paste between Host and Guest (Date exchange works via NAS of Fritzbox.

Installier GuestAdditions dosen´t work. When I mount VBoxGuestAdditions_4.3.10.iso, I chose sth. like "Autostart?" (sorry, I´m translating from German and don´t know the exact Phrases):

2. Now I´, asked, if I want to open the Guest-Additions-iso. I chose sty like "execute":

3. I receive a message like "could´t find the application to be opened":

What do I have to do to install GuestAdditions? Please bear in mind that I´m an absolute Newbie.
Thank you in advance,

Hyper

Have you tried reading the user manual? Chapter 4: Guest additions, sub-Chapter 4.2.2: Guest Additions for Linux, sub-sub-Chapter 4.2.2.1: Installing the Linux Guest Additions, sub-sub-sub-Chapter 4.2.2.1.7 Debian.

Not that I don't think people shouldn't be encouraged to read the manual but if they follow it for Debian the guest additions won't install.

Code: Select all

louis@wheezy:~$ cd /media/cdrom0
louis@wheezy:/media/cdrom0$ sudo sh /VBoxLinuxAdditions.run
sh: 0: Can't open /VBoxLinuxAdditions.run

Not to mention the manual decribes installing dkms then installing the guest additions before it tells people to install make gcc headers etc. plus 'build-essential' pulls in what is needed.

Loukingjr - thank you very much. There happened a lot of things in my VM...

I have tried to post the content of the terminal window, but due to any odd restrictions Iḿ not allowed to post urls...

but still not dragń-drop nor cut-copy-paste is possible.

Socratis - I admit I have read the manual. Actually, Iḿ a fan of manuals, really!

All - any other ideas?

you're welcome. you could have just pasted the text from the terminal in your post or attached the screenshot. Drag n Drop only works from the Host to the Linux guest. Copy and Paste should work with text or an image copied to the clipboard if you have bidirectional set in the VirtualBox settings for the guest.

I guess it would help if I read German. But what I see is you trying to autorun the guest additions. That won't work in Debian. Apparently you did install the guest additions in the terminal?

I installed them in about 300 ways...

Now I deleted the whole VM and am installing a new one. Then I´ll try loukingjr´s hint again.

Thank you all, I´ll keep you updated.

Thatś what I did. Now at least cut-copy-paste works. Common folder still doesnt work, but hre I have the workaround with the Fritz!Box.

Thank you for your help!

Now another question: How do you pronounce Debian? Like "Debby-Ann" or ist it more like "deep I am" (or "deeb I an)?

You're welcome. if you mean shared folders you have to add your user name to the vboxsf group.

Code: Select all

sudo usermod -aG vboxsf <your username>
replace <your username> with your Debian sign in name. without the brackets.
the shared folder will be in /media

I don't know how to pronounce it. :) but I say Deeb' e an

btw, you need to restart Debian after you add yourself to vboxsf.
