Guests with 3D accel cannot save state and restore

I am not able to close a VM with 3D acceleration with the "save state of machine" option and then start it back up later. I get the following error:

Failed to open a session for the virtual machine WinOS.

No error info.

When I disable 3D acceleration, the save state and restore works fine. Any ideas why? Can I save state with 3D acceleration on, somehow?
