Registering a VM with the same name as an existing one?

I have vm files (.vdi and .vbox files) with the same name but different uuid, and different directory as an existing one on my system. Can I register it without a problem? I"m trying to troubleshoot this problem <viewtopic.php?f=8&t=60849> and moved the VM to a known-working system.

I don't know for sure, never having tried it. I don't think it would work, but in any case it would be a bad idea, since the VM name is an important identifier, e.g. when using VBoxManage. I know for sure that conflicting media names are a no-no.

will changing the .vdi, .vbox name and editing the .vbox xml appropriately change the name or is it encoded in the .vdi somehow?

No, the VM name is not embedded within the VDI. The VM name is recorded in the .vbox file, and of course in the filenames.

When you say that these "files" have a different UUID, I assume you know that each media file plus the .vbox file has an embedded UUID, and none may match anything already registered.

Well, it worked. I renamed the .vdi file, the .vbox file, and changed the name of the VM and attached hd in the .vbox xml.

Nice to know, in a pinch.
