Epson scanner failing to hook up on VBox, any guest.

Hello there,
as a short term plan to upgrade my aging Snow Leopard, I was looking for ways to make my scanner work in a Ubuntu guest on Mac OS X host. It is an Epson Perfection 610 which connects through USB. I know it works in Ubuntu on a real silicon machine. So I shut down a Ubuntu virtual machine, added a USB filter, then restarted it, then plugged in the scanner. Its name appeared, unchecked, in the list of USB devices. I clicked it, then all other peripherals listed disappeared under the "Unknown device" moniker. The scanner was still unchecked. So I tried checking it again, and VBox returned an error. Trying to save the state of the virtual machine failed, and I had to make a hard shutdown.
How would I know why this particular peripheral fails to work correctly? And of course, how to attach it to a VM?
