Good day,
I'm writing to this forum because I am experimenting problems using USB GSM Modem in an Ubuntu 12.04 guest. Note that I can operate the modem successfully in another computer running Ubuntu 12.04 standalone.
I am using VirtualBox 4.3.10 with the Extensions Pack installed in a MAC OS 10.8.5. In the sttings I have enabled USB 2.0 (EHCI) controller, and added a filter for the specific USB Modem. The USB works well on the Host, and the connection can be shared with the Guest if I use NAT on the network settings. However, I needed the Modem to be operated directly by the guest, since I need a public IP in one of its interfaces.
When starting the VM, I select the USB Modem from the devices that appear listed, and it is successfully recognize and mounted (it appears in dmesg, lsusb, usb-device, etc). However, I am not able to connect using the same method used in my 12.04 standalone, i.e. vodafone-mobile-connect. I have tried sakis3g also, but no luck either. If I compare the behaviour of the standalone and the VM. I see that the problem in the VM is related to the serial port, as the device never claims one of the ports. In the standalone a line like this one eventually appears in /var/log/syslog when establishing connection:
(ZTE): GSM modem /sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1d.0/usb2/2-1/2-1.2 claimed port ttyUSB0
However, the virtual machine only reports an endless
(ttyUSBX) closing serial port...
(ttyUSBX) serial port closed
I have tried to configure the Serial ports in the settings of the VM, but it is not possible to modify them when the VM is already running, and gives me error with the Port/File Path, and fail to starts when modifying them with the VM stops.
I hope someone can help me with this.
Best,
carlos
