Can't get my VM network to work

Post by wildfire »

I have a Win XP guest OS running under a Win8 x64 host machine. WinXP installed just file on the VM but I can't get its network to work. I have worked with Virtualbox before and the network adapters all seemed to work without an issue but I can't figure out what's going on this time.

This is what >VBoxManage showvminfo WinXP --details has to say:

I forgot to mention the issue I'm having... The network adapter shows with a question mark under Device Manager. I have tried to reinstall the driver but the system cannot find any drivers compatible with it.

You selected "Win XP 64 bit" VM template when you created the VM,
but did you actually install from a Win XP 32 bit disc?

When you create a new Win XP VM with the VirtualBox GUI, selecting
"Win XP 32 bit" as the machine type in the GUI auto-selects "PC-NET Fast II"
as the network card - Win XP has built-in support for that card, but not
for the 8254OEM card - only Win XP 64 supports the 8254 card (Intel PRO/1000 MT)

You were right! The XP I have is a 32-bit one! I changed the network adapter and the OS type and it's now working, thank you very much!

Is there any other setting you're aware of I should change to make the VM fully aware it's a 32-bit OS instead of 64?
